"One of the interesting things about this whole process has been learning just how misleading the sizing used by the mainstream clothing industry is. As an experiment, try measuring the actual waistband of a pair of jeans with a tape measure, and compare this to the waist measurement stated on the label. My own experience: actual waistband is 3" larger than what the label says, both on my own trousers and those of a very slim woman friend.
